My Road Sign

Road signs serve a purpose, right? Their primary goal is to help us find our way from point A to point B. Yes, sometimes they also welcome us, remind us to be safe and help us remember someone who has given something (maybe their life) and should be remembered. This sign brings up another possibility. What appears to be a normal sign pointing to Sandtown, New Jersey is just a useful sign, right? It would seem that way, but this sign points to an area that doesn't really exist. In Place names in Burlington County New JerseySandtown, Burlington County, New Jersey, the author says that he found nothing about Sandtown. There is evidence that something existed by the name of Sandtown at some point, but certainly not in an age of automobiles and green and white road signs.

Road Sign NewsBeijing's Funny Road Sign Errors May Be Memories

Beijing is working on it's image and is updating it's English translations of street signs. Some humorous translation errors pointed out in the article include:
  • "Don't Fall Down" - a sign at the palace museum
  • “Being Urgent Call 110 Quickly”
  • "No Entry On Peacetime” instead of “Use Only In Case Of Emergency”
  • "Racist Park" - The translation of Beijing's Ethnic Minorities Park
Another article about Beijing's English Street Signs gives some other examples of humorous signs:
  • "Mind falling water"
  • "The slippery are very crafty"
  • "three quarters are under water" instead of "three-quarters of the park is a water surface."

Stargazers are piping mad in Japan about ground-based highway sign lights that are poluting the sky.

Road Sign NewsStudent Designs Speed Limit Sign

This is a pretty cool use of kids creativity to help adults act their age, not drive a speed that equals their age. This child used a tortoise and a hare (not really visible in this picture). This idea could be something that spreads. I'll add it to the page on myroadsign.com that talks about educational activities relating to street signs.

Road Sign NewsBlank Road Sign to Undeveloped Road

This article has a picture of a blank road sign that presumably was put up when the road was originally planned. Doesn't that seem a little premature? Wouldn't you leave space for it but not put up a sign? Do you think there will be little guys attaching white letters in clearview font?

Road Sign NewsEcho Street Renaming

In Anchorage, Alaska residents are complaining about the loss of their beloved street names. I can sympathize, however for 911 to be effecient, streets need to have unique names. They may want to put their energies into getting another really good unique name.
