MLK Jr. Street Sign - It's not the Sign, It's the Size of the Sign

The latest controversy in Lynchburg, Virginia revolves around the size of road signs honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. Hmm, I wonder why this continues to be a sensitive issue across the United States? We don't still have a race problem here do we? That all went away with the 60's, thank goodness.

Rosa Parks Street

Detroit has recently renamed a street after Rosa Parks. Now Cinncinnati has too. Don't expect this to be the last street renamed for Rosa Parks. She is someone who should be remembered throughout this country, if only to remind us to stand up for what is right.

Hampstead Garden Suburb Replaced New Street Signs

This UK suburb has reverted to an older style of street signs to maintain historical integrity. While I don't think this is always necessary (Those signs were new at one point, right? They weren't always historical.) but I do like to see signs matching the local community and not some generic standard.

Martin Luther King Jr. Drive

Street in South Bend, Indiana is rechristened with a dual name. I have great respect for Dr. King and I appreciate what they've done. But a dual named street? Sometimes you have to wonder.

Hollywood Sign and Hollywood and Vine Street Sign for Sale

Did you know that the Hollywood letters are not the original? Did you know that Hugh Hefner led the fundraising to replace them? I didn't. This article gave a nice little review of its history and of the recent auction of the letters and notes at the end that the Hollywood and Vine street sign from the early 40's is being sold.

August Wilson to be Honored with Street Sign in Seattle

The pedestrian way that goes by the Seattle Repertory and Intiman theaters will be renamed August Wilson Way. What's cool about this story is not only are they recognizing a great American, but they did it as the result of one citizen's suggestion. I share the writer's opinion that they shouldn't stop with a street sign.

Lake Street to Lake Park Drive

We try to pretend like we can control what goes on around us. Stories like these remind us that we often have very little control. In this case, it seems like nobody has control of the situation. Nobody will admit to begining a chain of events which has changed a street name from Lake Street to Lake Park Drive in Winona, MN.
