My Road Sign

The people of Smartsville are upset about their town being named Smartville (notice the missing "s") on road signs. Apparently the name of the town was changed because it was grammatically incorrect. I have no idea which grammar rule that falls under. Anyone willing to fill me in on this?

Road Sign NewsUnnecessary Road Signs Being Removed

1000 road signs are being removed as unnecessary in Caerphilly county in south Wales. That's an awful lot of signs to be considered unnecessary. The picture in the article, reproduced here, shows some pretty good examples. I can't say that I see a lot of extra signs, but I may pay a little more attention tomorrow on my way to work.

Road Sign NewsRoad Signs and the Posts that Hold Them

Take a look at this article about the posts that hold road signs. I really didn't know anything about the kinds of posts they have to use. Some interesting information about wood being needed for heavier signs and the fact that they are meant to give when hit by a car. It's like the break-away hoop!

Great picture of Brett Coelho among his backyard full of signs. I would like to see his exhibition but doubt I'll get there. I do recommend his online gallery.

I'd like to believe that it was the Normal Street Bar that caused the city to get the name wrong on the sign and not a simple mix up. It makes for a much better story.

Not only does this article point out two new street sign names that are apt to get stolen often, but it talks about the origin of the names. Read about Hooterville Avenue and Limberdink Road.

Road Sign NewsMetric Road Signs on Campus

Just in time for National Metric Week (I didn't know it existed either) Florida Gulf Coast University installed metric signs on campus. I have to admit that I am terrible with metric. I've always considered myself to be relatively intelligent yet I've always struggled with the metric system (though it is SOOO much easier for me to understand) and foreign languages. My stumbling block with both is that I couldn't use them in my day to day life and thus they never stuck. My international friends think I'm a dope. I say I'm American. May

Quebec Street Sign from Brittanica.com
Not being from Quebec, I wouldn't have guessed how upset people could get over leaving the word "national" off a street sign. Sovereignists see this as an intentional snub and see the city's planned mural as a deliberate attempt to promote Canadian unity.

Cool article about a playhouse that was relocated. I like that it was important to the owner to move the original street sign with it. It just wouldn't be the same buying a personalized street sign.

Interesting art installation in Edmonton called Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. I would like to see more than the one painting in the article. Anyone have a tip to find others? The picture is of the other famous work by the same name.
