Pierce County Washington is home to Gay Road and at least one Route 69. So, one would think that these are the most popular street signs to steal. Apparently, they are not. The most common is right beneath your nose. It is the trusty stop sign. If you look through the archives you'll see that stolen stop signs are a bad, bad thing. See istockphoto.com for the image.

Two 18 year olds and a 19 year old were caught in a drunken evening of street sign theft. Stealing street signs continues to be a way to have a good time on the town (literally).

Electronic road signs are nothing new. An electronic road sign that looks at a car's license plate, determine's what country its from and then displays a message in that country's language saying "drive on left". While the technology sounds incredibly cool, wouldn't it be easier to have a series of signs in different languages? What if the guy with German plates doesn't really speak German?

This is the most extreme chase I've heard of involving a stolen street sign. This is one of those situations where I would imagine that their actions relating to the chase will get them a stiffer penalty that the original crime.

The city of Columbia, MO is taking a stance against road sign theft. Apparently, previous law forced officers to observe the theft in progress or have a witness. Now, it will be illegal to own a city street sign at all. My guess is that other areas have the same problem. However, many of the articles I've posted have talked about street sign busts that don't say anything about needing to know

This story breaks the mold. People are stealing the road signs used to block off an unsafe stretch of road. Instead of just replacing the sign, the National Works Administration, which has a unique website, is going to roll boulders in front of the road. I call that old school. Does a boulder in the middle of the road pose a danger of its own?

As with many other localities, Anchorage, AK deals with the realities of street sign theft. According to a Bentonville, AR deputy, "Alcohol was not involved; stupidity was" involved in this incident. The criminals in question shot at a sign while sitting on their front porch. There's no reason to leave the comforts of home to be a vandal.

Apparently, the problem of road sign theft is not limited to Western countries. In Malaysia, teens and others looking for a quick buck (or Malaysian ringgit). According the article, you can see junk collectors riding down the street ony bicycles loaded down with stolen street signs. I can't quite imagine seeing that.

Its unlikely that someone is going to spot a road sign being removed along the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah. This is a remote area that I'm guessing doesn't see a stead stream of cars. Since the thief made off with 20 signs, my guess is that this was a scrap metal run. I know that everyone who reads this will be startled that the youngsters who were smoking pot outside an establishment in Amsterdam were not discouraged by a sign that depicted "no cannabis smoking" but actually stole it.
