Famous Intersections

I believe that in every country there are street corners that everyone knows about. Sometimes they are famous, often infamous. Either way, we remember them and they mean more than just where two streets meet. Take a look at some of these famous intersections I've collected. Can you think of others? Can you tell me why they're famous? or infamous?

Famous Intersections in California

California seems to have the highest number of famous intersections. While it is a cool place, I would guess that it has more to do with the long history of the American movie industry in Hollywood.

Hollywood and Vine (Bob Hope Square), Hollywood, CA

The intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, California, was the heart of radio and movie related businesses as early as the 20's. The Hollywood Walk of Fame is centered on this intersection. Today, this history is mostly a memory. The exception is that Capitol Records is still located here. The name "Bob Hope Square" was added in 2003 to commemorate the legendary performer's 100th birthday.

See this description of the Hollywood and Vine as it is today.

Some great pictures of the area at Hollywood and Vicinity.

Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco

The intersection of Haight and Ashbury Streets became the name of the surrounding neighborhood, more often known as "the Haight". A hangout for the beat generation and later hippies, it is still known for its bohemian atmosphere.

Hollywood and Highland

Once the site of the famous Hollywood Hotel, Hollywood and Highland is now home to the Kodak Theatre, home of the Academy Awards.

For a glitzy view, try Hollywood + Highland.

Castro and Market in San Francisco

Castro and Market became a center of gay life in San Francisco. Located near the intersection is the Castro Theatre and a wide variety of restaurants. The area is most widely known as "the Castro".

Wilshire Boulevard and Rodeo Drive

From Wilshire Boulevard north on Rodeo drive until Santa Monica Boulevard is one of the world's most famous shopping districts. It is also home to the tallest building in town, the Beverly Wilshire Apartment Hotel, now known as the Regent Beverly Wilshire.

I-405 and Sunset Boulevard, LA

Many hotels will tell you they are located near this famous intersection. Tell me why its so famous! I don't know.
